Darlene McCoy is embracing joy even in the midst of life’s challenges. The singer, songwriter, actress, and radio host recently joined Get Up Mornings with Erica Campbell to introduce her new single, “Dancing Through the Night.” The uplifting track is an anthem for those enduring difficult times, encouraging them to find joy even in the darkness. “For anybody that might be going through a night season, joy comes in the morning, so you might as well dance in the night,” McCoy shared.
During the conversation, McCoy opened up about her personal health journey, revealing how a breast cancer diagnosis two years ago shaped her perspective. Rather than dwelling on the hardship, she held onto faith and maintained a spirit of joy. “When you get bad news, you have a choice in how you’re going to go through your dark season,” she said. “We can either go through it knowing the Lord has us, or we can be sad and ask for sympathy.”
McCoy emphasized her belief in God’s plan, referencing scripture as her source of strength. “God has every one of my steps ordered, and His plan is for me to prosper and be in good health, even as my soul prospers,” she said. “So I think it is prosperous for all of our souls to continue to dance and keep joy in our spirit, even when we’re going through it. We are not gonna stop in the middle of hell.”
The multi-talented entertainer also reflected on her journey in gospel music and radio. As the host of The Nightly Spirit, McCoy enjoys the opportunity to support and uplift other artists while broadening the reach of gospel music. “Gospel is not just a genre; it’s a platform for multiple genres of music,” she explained. “Our God is bigger, our sound is bigger, and it reaches more people than just church folk.”
When asked about navigating a personal battle like cancer without a strong support system, McCoy offered words of encouragement. She urged those struggling to recognize the love that already surrounds them. “Pay more attention to the people that love you,” she advised. “Find them, confide in them, and let them walk with you. Don’t be prideful—be open. Sometimes, we think we’re not loved as much as we are, but when we allow people in, we realize just how much love is there.”
