Right-Wing ‘Journalist’ Dog-Whistles For Poll Watchers To Racially Profile Voters Who Don’t ‘Look Like’ Citizens

Do y’all remember when Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene stepped completely outside of her character and blasted right-wing bigot Laura Loomer for being “extremely racist” in remarks Loomer made about Kamala Harris? Well, apparently, Greene needs to have a similar conversation with her current boyfriend, conservative “journalist” Brian Glenn, who has suggested brazenly that Trump-supporting poll watchers should racially profile voters in November to make sure they’re legal U.S. citizens.

“If you go to a polling center and you see bus loads, van loads of people walking up to vote that clearly perhaps look like they could be… let’s just make sure people are checking IDs,” Glenn said while covering a Trump rally over the weekend. “Because if people are going in with zero ID and they’re not a U.S. citizen, then they shouldn’t be allowed to vote, period.”

“So we need poll watchers that can perhaps sound the alarm if they think that is going on so that maybe some election officials can double check on that,” he continued. “So if we start to see all these caravans of people coming in, let’s make sure they’re all legal before we allow them to vote. It’s as simple as that.”

In other words: We really need to make sure we’re double-checking all of the non-white voters to make sure their paperwork is in order.

First and foremost, what Glenn appeared to be suggesting is very much illegal. For the most part, all poll watchers can do is observe and report suspicious activity. They are not allowed to personally interact with voters, especially to spot-check them for identification.

Ultimately, what Glenn is doing here is perpetuating lies about election fraud in U.S. elections, including a long-standing Republican lie about “illegal” immigrants voting en mass. Republican legislators even proposed a bill that would make it illegal for non-citizens to vote in U.S. elections — which, of course, is already a crime. Earlier this year, Donald Trump’s campaign put the word out that it plans to deploy more than 100,000 attorneys and volunteers across battleground states to monitor the counting of votes — all based on Trump’s thoroughly debunked lie about election fraud costing him the 2020 presidential race. Trump’s daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, went on a whole press tour to talk about how the campaign will stop “illegal citizens” from voting — which study after study has shown happens so rarely it’s a virtually non-existent issue — and she even claimed poll watchers will “physically handle ballots,” which is also very much illegal.

Anyway, one shouldn’t hold their breath expecting Greene to have the same energy for Glenn that she had for Loomer, which appeared to be part of an ongoing beef between the two. After all, her new boo hasn’t been any more defamatory towards migrants than she has been towards migrants, Muslims, Black people, and pretty much any protester who isn’t a Jan. 6 defendant.
