A gunman opened fire inside a Georiga school on Wednesday, drawing attention to the relaxed gun laws in the state.

According to CNN, a 14-year-old boy shot and killed four people inside Apalachee High School in Winder, Georiga.  Law enforcement said at least 30 people were injured during the shooting, but it was unclear how many people were injured from gunshot wounds. The young teen was taken into custody, which was confirmed by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

“At approximately 10:23 a.m., officers from multiple law enforcement agencies and Fire/EMS personnel were dispatched to the high school in reference to a reported active shooting,” the Barrow County Sheriff’s office said in a statement.

GBI also confirmed their assistance on social media by posting, “We have agents on site assisting local, state, and federal law enforcement w/ the investigation. One suspect is in custody. “

The post continued, “Law enforcement has arrived. Please do not attempt to come to the school at this time while officers work to secure the area.”

Students were quickly evacuated from the scene and made their way to the school’s football field.

“What we see behind us is an evil thing today,” Sheriff Jud Smith said during a press conference.

Attorney General Merrick Garland said the US Department of Justice “stands ready” to support the Winder community after the shooting.

“We are still gathering information, but the FBI and ATF are on the scene, working with state, local and federal partners,” Garland said. “I am devastated for the families that have been affected by this terrible tragedy. “The Justice Department stands ready to provide any resources or support that the Winder community needs in the days ahead.”

The White House also said in a statement that President Biden’s “administration will continue coordinating with federal, state, and local officials as we receive more information.”

Biden and his team also called for stronger gun laws after the latest school shooting in Winder, Georgia

“After decades of inaction, Republicans in Congress must finally say ‘enough is enough’ and work with Democrats to pass common-sense gun safety legislation,” Biden said in a statement. “We must ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines once again, require safe storage of firearms, enact universal background checks, and end immunity for gun manufacturers. These measures will not bring those who were tragically killed today back, but it will help prevent more tragic gun violence from ripping more families apart.”

Georgia has some of the most relaxed gun laws in the country.

The legislature passed a law requiring colleges and universities to allow guns on campus in 2017. In 2022, Georgia repealed its last foundational policy by passing permitless carry legislation, according to Everytown, one of the largest gun violence prevention organizations in the country.
