Why A Jurassic Park Reboot Would Fail
Colin Trevorrow, who has helmed Jurassic World Dominion, has revealed that if the Jurassic Park franchise continues, it has to look forward than starting from scratch — as he believes that anyone who reboots the property would doom themselves to failure.
While appearing in an interview with Collider recently, Trevorrow was asked if the franchise should be rebooted after Jurassic World Dominion, or if it was best for the makers to keep going on its current trajectory.
Here’s what the director said:
“This is just my own personal opinion. One of the challenges of this franchise is that to reboot it, you have to remake Jurassic Park. And I weep for whoever takes that on because that is one of the greatest movies ever made,” the director said.
“And so I think in a lot of ways, our only choice is to move forward and to expand,” he continued. “Because going back there and redoing Spielberg and Crichton, best of luck.” Here, Trevorrow is referring to Steven Spielberg’s classic movie from 1993, which was based upon Michael Crichton’s novel of the same name.
Jurassic Park Is Seen As One Of The Best Films, Ever
Jurassic Park (1993) is considered one of the best movies of the ’90s and the film is still lauded for its VFX and technical innovation. Upon its theatrical release, Jurassic Park went on to become the highest-grossing movie of all time — a title it held until it was dethroned by Titanic in 1997. More recently, in 2018, the Library of Congress also selected the film to be preserved in the US National Film Registry due to its cultural significance.
Spielberg returned to direct 1997’s The Lost World (which was also loosely based on the 1995 novel The Lost World by Crichton). After the sequel, director Joe Johnston helmed Jurassic Park III, which was released in 2001. In 2015, Trevorrow picked the reins on the franchise for Jurassic World, a sequel set 22 years after the original Jurassic Park.
When Does Jurassic World Dominion release?
Jurassic World also received a sequel with 2018’s Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, which saw J.A. Bayona in the director’s seat. Trevorrow is now back to helm Jurassic World Dominion, which is slated to close out the saga.
Jurassic World Dominion releases on Friday, June 10.
